Dear fellow Callies
It is a long time since our page on the website has been updated but here we go . Our Federation Chief Jean Kelly and her Concert Andrew arrived for their Official Welcome on August 14th. We put them up at Lavender Lane where they were very well looked after by Margaret. Joining them was the Highland Provincial Chieftain, Margaret West and our own “Past Provincials”, Cathy and John Bell. The weather was kind to them and they spent Saturday afternoon sunning themselves on the verandah.

We all started to arrive around 6 “ish” and the proceedings started at about 7pm. We were around 30 souls in number and we all had a great time ! Cold though the evening was, the atmosphere in the hall was very warm. I opened the proceedings by welcoming the Fed Chief and her husband and all our visitors, and thanked them for joining us. Jean gave us a short “PEP” talk and gave us some insight as to how other Caledonian Societies are trying to swell their numbers in other Provinces. We could possibly take a leaf out of St. Andrew’s Societies book and try to get our younger families involved by having some of our functions more “Child Friendly”. As Jean said, if we can encourage the children to come along, the parents will follow, and where is there a safer place to have your kids go than a Callies “do” ?.

We were very well fed, Margaret having put her kitchen to good use, and we soon warmed up even more once the entertainment got going. Brian the Busker gave us a varied selection and not to be left out, John and Cathy Bell, together with others also did their turn. We laughed at the jokes, sang along with the music, listened raptly to the Classical Guitar selection provided, enjoyed the great food and chatted well into the wee hours . I think the Fed Chief and her party were very glad not to have more than the building next door to travel to their beds as we had such a good evening.

Thanks you to all our members who joined us to make it such a great evening, and to all who helped with the setting up of the hall, the food and the entertainment. Many Thanks. We all appreciated your effort.

Yours Aye,
Lynnette
Chief, Bloemfontein Society
