SEPTEMBER 2011 NEWSLETTER

Dear Fellow Caledonians

The Chairing and Kirking were both well supported by members and friends and much enjoyed by all.  A very big thank you to all who contributed in so many ways to the success and especially to our two guest artists, pianist Bruce Gardiner and vocalist George Mountjoy.

We have scheduled two functions for September.  A Spring Tea will be held at St Andrews Clubhouse on Saturday 10th September 2011 at 10 am.  Tickets are available from committee members at R30.00 a head and you will be treated to an excellent tea, superb entertainment and prizes for lucky ticket holders.  Profits will go towards the Gathering.

Andrew MacDonell has arranged a Whisky Tasting at the M.O.T.H. Hall, Elizabeth Road, Cambridge on Saturday 24th September at 7 pm.  There is no cover charge for social attendees, but a small charge per dram for the tasters.  Please bring a small plate of eats and tickets for the whisky raffle will be on sale at R5.00 each.

NEWS OF MEMBERS

Callum and Beryl MacIver are enjoying the visit of their daughter, Lynn, together with her husband, Paul, and son, Andrew Lane from the UK.  It has been a pleasure to welcome them at all the Caledonian functions and activities during their stay.  A very nice picture of the Murray family appeared in the Go! recently, when members gathered to celebrate Elliot and Cynthia’s eightieth birthdays which both fell during this year.

PIPEBAND

The band has had a busy time with the Jikaleza Festival, an appearance at Spargs, the Chairing and the Kirking.  Practice continues each Monday evening at the Drill Hall at 7.30 pm – learners at 6.30 pm. Contact Rob – 082 8978 571.

S.C.D.C

Dancing takes place At Hamilton Club on Tuesday evenings 7.20 pm to 9 pm and the dancers have shown their talents recently at Spargs and at the Chairing.  Visitors and new members are always welcome.  Contact Merylees (043 721 0375)

LADIES GROUP

The group is delighted to welcome Ann Woodhurst and Agnes Cowie to their circle and look forward to many happy times together.  If you are free on the first Tuesday morning of the month, please join us for a very pleasant get-together.  The next meeting will be held at the home of Maureen Illingworth, 602 Parklands, Jarvis Road, Berea on Tuesday 6th September at 9.30 am.  Contact Rose on 043 726 3114.

EASTERN CAPE HIGHLAND GATHERING 2012

Regular meetings have commenced and will continue to take place on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7 pm at the home of Dave and Maureen Rankin, 9 Nelson Avenue, Cambridge.  Interested members are welcome to attend and your input will be valued.  The next fund-raising event will be a Games Evening at the home of Alan and Ann Woodhurst, 12 Hudson Avenue, Vincent on Tuesday 2nd September at 6 pm.  These evenings have become very popular and include a delicious supper.  The cost is R50 plus a small donation to the Gathering.  Phone Alan or Ann (043 721 3295) for catering purposes.  Details of the planned publicity event on 29th October will appear in the next newsletter. Please diarise this date.  Enquiries, ideas and suggestions for the Gathering are always welcome. Contact Dave (043 726 3074 or

082 9000 948)

HIGHLAND AND IRISH DANCERS

The dancers are kept on their toes with numerous requests for entertainment in addition to a very full programme of Festivals and Exams to keep them busy.  Emily Frauenstein brought back 3 trophies from the SA Champs at the end of July – well done Emily.  The East London Highland Festival is to be revived after some year’s absence and will take place at Clarendon Primary School on 24th September 2011.  This being Heritage Day, cultural dress is encouraged.  There will be an entrance charge and anyone wishing to have a stall will be accommodated at a small fee. (Tea, food and lunch are excluded as these will be on sale from the dancing schools).

We wish Roxanne Piderit well as she takes part in the SA Tattoo from 1st to 4th September 2011 at Monte Casino in Johannesburg.  Contact Roxanne (082 455 8661).

The MOTHs and Buffalo Volunteer Rifles continue to support our society in many ways and we are most grateful.  Please reciprocate whenever possible.
