We were all shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Ian MacQueen after a short illness. We send our condolences to his family and many friends.

For years Ian charmed us with his beautiful voice, entertaining us and keeping alive the rich tradition of Scottish music. He will be very sorely missed.

The society was represented at his funeral by the Chief, the Secretary, Past Chief Brian Christie and members Eileen Hynd and Andrew Christie.

AGM

The Society held its AGM on Sunday 26 June, attended by just 16 members. There was a frank discussion of some of the problems we face, particularly the very poor response from members to recent functions we have organised.

We are determined to keep the society flourishing, but we decided to cut down the number of events to focus on the big occasions – Burns Nicht, Chief’s Night, Federation and Provincial welcomes, Past Chiefs’ and ladies tea, Halloween, Christmas, and if we can find a venue, Hogmanay, plus the very informal functions like outings and picnics.

We are also going to look for other venues which will be convenient for everybody.

We would welcome your views on these proposals.

The outgoing committee was re-elected, with the addition of Donna Powell to whom we extend a warm welcome.

One or two offered to help the committee, and we hope some other dear members will volunteer their services.

The society extends its thanks to Fred and Heather Brokenshire who retired from the committee this year after serving the society as Chief, Lady President and Consort.

JUNE 2011 NEWSLETTER

URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Ceilidh cancelled

As many of you will know, we had to cancel the Ceilidh scheduled for 28 May. This is because less than 20 of our members (plus a few good friends from St Andrew’s Scottish Society) confirmed their attendance, and we felt that a Ceilidh would not be feasible with so few people. We apologise again for the inconvenience caused to those members who did plan to come.

The Committee discussed this, and decided that it raised important questions about how the Society is functioning and what you want the Committee to do. There is clearly no point in organising functions which you, the members, are not interested in attending.

In order to discuss these issues, we have brought forward the Annual General Meeting to Sunday 26 June (See notice below) so that we can hear the views of our members and, we hope, elect a new committee full of enthusiastic members to implement your plans.

Unfortunately no-one has so far responded to last month’s urgent appeal for volunteers to serve on the Committee and as Chief and Chieftains. Our committee has already shrunk and some of the existing members will not be standing for re-election. If you want to see our society surviving and keeping our Scottish heritage alive, please give serious consideration to offering your services at the AGM.

Meanwhile we are for the moment suspending the next two planned functions – the Noot vir Noot and the Christmas in July, so that we can take account of the views expressed at the AGM.

DIARY

AGM

CELTIC FEST

Several of our members who attended this new event on 13-15 May in Modderfontein and ran a stall, along with the St Andrew’s Scottish Society, were very impressed.

The well-attended event reminded us of the old Royal Scottish Gatherings, with all the traditional events – Pipe Bands, Highland and Scottish Country Dancing (involving several Easterns members), plus the Welsh Male Voice Choir, the Blarney Brothers and the Code Red Drum Corps and lots of stalls selling souvenirs and food.

Congratulations to Rory Bellingham and his team for the hard work they must have put into it. It is planned to become an annual event and the Caledonian movement should get fully behind this great initiative.

BEST WISHES

To Lil Hughes and Ian McQueen, who have both had spells in hospital. We hope you recover fully.

CONGRATULATIONS

Happy birthday this month to: Fred Brokenshire, Heather Brokenshire, Janette Pollock, Robbie Turner, Lyn Forbes, Alister Wilson, Almeida Whitley, Jessie Thompson, Ralph Henderson, Geraldine Devine, Ian McQueen, Trevor Powell.

BURNS NICHT

From Chief Norma Craven

A huge thank you to all of you who made our Burns Nicht such a memorable occasion once again.

It was a great turnout, with many members we have not seen for a while and a good number of new faces, which we hope will turn into new members.

We were also very pleased to host our Provincial Chief and Lady President, Robin and Glenys Kelly.

It was particularly encouraging to have a pipe band again, without which no Burns evening is complete. I hope this will be the start of a long relationship between the Callies and the new Wits Rifles band.

The dancing too – Highland and Country - was superb. All the artistes performed their tasks with skill and aplomb and the event was kept running without a hitch by our MC and music maestro, Brian.

A special thank you must go to my committee and the non-committee members who volunteered their services to help organise the function.

CONDOLENCES

We have heard with sadness the passing of Marge Arundale. We send our condolences to her family and friends.

CONGRATULATIONS

Happy birthday this month to: Norma Craven, Lil Hughes, Barbara Peacock, Carlos das Neves, Evelyn Hammond, Pamela Christie, Peter Forbes, Joe Porter.

Happy anniversary to: Jane and Bill Hewitt, Susan and Gordon McQueen.

BEST WISHES

To Alistair Wilson, and Helen Weir of St Andrew’s Scottish Society who have been in hospital. We wish them a full recovery.
