Dear Members

Are you all getting worried?  -  all this sunshine and no rain!!  Does this mean August and September will be very wet?  We’ll have to wait and see!

N B: We apologize to you all for this Newsletter being so early.  Mary and I are moving house between 29^th July and 3^rd August (to Pinewood Village) and we can’t be certain about when the computer will be up and running. Please don’t forget the 27^th August function!

Well, the AGM is past, and thanks to all members who attended  – a good turnout of 32 Members. Your Committee is virtually unchanged with only one new member – Anne Harris.  We welcome her.  Your Chief and Lady President is Eddie & Anne Stevenson for the 7^th time; Secretary Mary Wallace, Treasurer Urszula Heeps, Scribe Gordon Wallace, plus Bill Heeps, Jean Girvan, Spencer Masters, Mary Douglas and Anne Harris.  The main discussion was our finances (which are down a lot) and the type of functions we can have in future.  Your Committee will discuss these matters at our August Committee meeting.

The evening will start with the formalities of inducting our Chief and Lady President for the year ahead plus some Piping.  Then there will be a big screen viewing of one of Andre Rieu’s very popular DVDs (everyone who has seen one featuring his orchestra and entertainers has thoroughly enjoyed the show).  The DVD will be stopped when the fish & chips arrive at 9.00 pm (supplied as usual by Mr Fish) and then finished after the meal interval.  Part of the DVD (called “La Vie est Belle” performed in Berlin) has massed pipes and drums.  We hope for as good a turnout as we get for the Edinburgh Tattoo evening each February.  Bring your friends.  BOOK BY PHONING ANNE 021 554 0302.

There are quite a few of our members still with health problems and we ask you to remember them all:-  Bill Campbell (still immobilised at home); Randy Ferguson (his eyesight is pretty poor now); Fred McQuarrie; Tommy Cruikshanks; Melvyn Deacon and Doug Lockett.  Ronnie Adams is undergoing treatment presently.  We will keep you in our thoughts, Ronnie.  We hope that husband, Ron’s knee op has gone well.  Jean Girvan will be visiting her son in Reading and then up to Scotland to see family up there for the month of August.  Mary Douglas is having a marvellous time in Seattle, and is due back 29^th August.  Bernie & Wilma Olivier enjoyed their U K trip.

This year Cape Town Callies celebrate 130 years since they were founded, and they are having a special function on Saturday 3^rd December.

Gordon and Mary very much enjoyed their Provincial Chieftain visit to East London in June, and received a lovely welcome from Committee and Members.

This was a good evening, and Gordon & Mary say thanks to the Committee for arranging the function and presenting us with a lovely clock.  Unfortunately, due to illness and other events, the turnout of members was fairly poor.  However we enjoyed Judy Lucas’ Irish dance girls, and the excellent C F A Pipe Band plus general dancing.

Bill Campbell is still having a difficult time with his legs infection problem and has been in hospital for a second time.  We hope this time, Bill, you will make a good recovery. Many of us know Myra Horne in Cape Town Callies.  Our sympathies to Myra on the loss of her sister after a long illness.  Randy Ferguson has had an eye op, and Fred McQuarrie is still receiving more treatment. Tommy Cruikshanks , Melvyn Deacon and Doug Lockett are also to be remembered in our prayers. Mary Douglas sends regards to all from USA and Margaret Boyd, Joe & Janie Brown send their best wishes from Scotland (Joe & Janie will be here in Cape Town for Joe’s 80^th birthday on 12^th November).  Janie’s knee op has not been successful and she is having pain and difficulty walking.  (sorry to hear that, Janie).  Bernie & Wilma Olivier leave shortly for UK;  Margot Johns is also heading  for England, and Jean Girvan is going to Scotland in August.  Enjoy yourselves.

Our variable Cape Town weather seems to be our most talked-about topic these days – cold one day, and two days later back to Summer clothes.  No wonder many of us are getting colds and such-like.  I bet you all enjoyed April 29^th – THE ROYAL WEDDING!!  What a magnificent spectacle all round (and Kate and William looked pretty good too!!!).  Only Britain could put together such a wonderful show.

Now – a repeat of last month’s special appeal:-

Boat Trip – Canal Walk Friday 15^th April

40 folks came, and we all very much enjoyed the ½ hour cruise plus tea/coffee/muffins afterwards.  Some walked round the Bird Sanctuary Island (INTAKA) before going home  If you haven’t already been there, it is well worth a visit.

Please remember to keep Jean Girvan in your thoughts and prayers.  Bill Campbell is having a difficult time at present with continuing problems affecting his legs and feet.  He is at present in Kingsbury Hospital having a very painful bacterial infection in his leg treated.

We wish you a good recovery, Bill.  Randy Ferguson and Fred McQuarrie are both receiving more treatment.  Tommy Cruikshanks, Melvyn Deacon and Doug Lockett are also to be remembered in our prayers. Ron Adams is recovering presently from a knee op.  Hope you are back at Country Dancing soon, Ron.

Mary Douglas is off again to USA from 1^st June to 29^th August and the Oliviers (Bernie & Wilma) are going to U K in June.  Have a good trip all three of you and enjoy yourselves.  Cecily & Des Martin are now home after their trip overseas.  Shirley Churms is in the U K seeing friends and family.

With so many Public Holidays recently, our class hasn’t really got away with a swing yet, but we are now looking forward to meeting regularly on a Monday afternoon and enjoying the camaradie our class is well known for as well as some much needed exercise.

APRIL 2011 NEWSLETTER

Well – April is here and we have had a few “April Showers” – so maybe some much needed decent rains will come soon.

A sad note to start with.  As you all know, we’ve been keeping our Committee Member, Bill Girvan, very much in our thoughts over the last few months.  However, his health steadily worsened and he died in hospital on Monday, 28^th March. His son Billy was here from U K and also daughter Susan from Johannesburg to be with their Dad and Mum, Jean.  A Memorial Service was held on Wednesday 30^th March in Pinelands Presbyterian Church (Billy had to return to U K urgently).  There was a good turnout at the Service of friends and Callies members.  Our condolences and thoughts go to Jean & family at this time.

1. BOAT TRIP ON THE CANAL AT CANAL WALK SHOPPING CENTRE, CENTURY CITY, FRIDAY MORNING 15^th APRIL

We have over 20 folks coming already, but let’s have a few more. Come and enjoy a morning with a difference.  This very pleasant trip on Cape Town’s “Venice” canal is almost as good as a sail on the QE 2!!  Cost is R20.00 for us Pensioners (special price arranged by Bill Heeps).  We meet at 10.00 a m in the Parking Area for Intaka Island.  There is a Tearoom beside the Parking Area and we can have tea, scones etc to our own account.  Up to 60 people can be taken on different boat trips (each boat seats 16).  The ½ hour trip goes round the Island and down the Grand Canal behind Canal Walk Shopping Centre.  This morning outing will finish before lunchtime. You can stay on to do the walk on Intaka Island if you wish (very interesting) – R4.00 for Pensioners.

Dress casual (no kilts) – bring a friend or two.

Due to computer technical difficulties, we were not able to send the map with directions in last month’s Newsletter to all of you.  Once Anne has the list of who is coming, you will be phoned and the map with directions posted to you immediately if required.

Enjoyed by 108 Seniors from Pinelands Retirement Homes (plus some of our own Seniors).  There was a Piper, Line Dancing, Sing-a-long, general dancing and scrumptious tea/coffee, cake etc (thanks to a generous donation from our own Pinelands Spar).  Thanks also to all drivers who assisted.

We are pleased to welcome Annie & Dougie Slevin from Big Bay to our Society.  They are both Scots born, and they have been attending our functions over the past few months.  We hope they continue to enjoy the friendship and entertainment for which our Society is well known.

Please keep Jean Girvan in your thoughts and prayers through this difficult period after the passing of Bill. We must give a big thank you to Anne & Eddie Stevenson and Urszula & Bill Heeps who have all been fantastic supporting (and very involved) friends to Jean & Bill through the last few months.  June & Bill Campbell have thankfully recovered very well from the attack they both suffered in their Thornton Place home on 1^st March.  They send thanks to Callies members who phoned them. Please keep our ailing members in your thoughts and prayers, especially Maureen and Fred McQuarrie.  Also Randy Ferguson, Tommy Cruikshanks, Piper Melvyn Deacon and Doug Lockett.  Norma Harris had an operation and is recovering while staying with her daughter in J’burg.  Herman de Groot has just had a toenail removed (ouch!) and is having the cataract eye operation this week.

Hopefully, the rest of us are doing OK.

1. Mary & Gordon (in capacity of Provincial Chieftain & Lady President) spent 5 days in Port Elizabeth in March, and were very well looked after by the P E Members.  We were hosted at the lovely home of our Fed Chief – Frances & Ivan Dickson.  The Eastern Cape Gathering was on Sunday 27^th March – excellent all day event.

1. Regarding booking to attend any function, we always say in the Newsletter  “phone Anne Stevenson 021.554.0302” – her home phone number.  She can then immediately write your name on her list of those attending.  PLEASE – DO NOT RELY ON GIVING YOUR NAME VERBALLY TO ANNE (OR EDDIE) – DO NOT SMS YOUR NAME – DO NOT CELLPHONE HER (unless you catch her when she is at home).  Mistakes have occurred and names missed off lists – it is not fair on Anne to expect her to remember messages given in the above manner.  PLEASE PHONE HER ON HER LANDLINE NUMBER AS GIVEN IN EVERY NEWSLETTER.  MAKE ANNE’S LIFE EASIER.  THANKS!!
2.  The next AGM is Saturday, 2^nd July 2011.  Your present Committee has been together for a long time (some of us for 15-20years, and Anne and Eddie have been in the CHAIR for a total of 6 years).  For health reasons, Randy Ferguson has come off Committee and Jean and Bill Girvan are almost certain to come off.  This will leave us with 8 Committee Members.  We all feel we’ve done enough, and would wish to come off Committee.  IF WE DID – WHO WOULD RUN PINELANDS CALLIES?? – WE COULD CEASE TO EXIST!!  WE MUST HAVE NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS – CONSIDER THIS MATTER SERIOUSLY AND PHONE ANNE OR EDDIE NOW (021.554.0302)

This is our annual FREE party for Seniors living in some of our Pinelands Retirement Homes plus, of course, our own Callies Seniors are all invited (usually 100 people attend for 2 hours of enjoyment from 2.30 p m to 4.30 p m)  YOU MUST, HOWEVER, PHONE ANNE STEVENSON (021.554.0302) to say you are coming.  Tea, cake and entertainment will be provided (plus a Piper).

1. BOAT TRIP ON THE CANAL AT CANAL WALK SHOPPING CENTRE, CENTURY CITY, FRIDAY MORNING 15^th APRIL

Come and enjoy a morning with a difference.  This very pleasant trip on Cape Town’s “Venice” canal is almost as good as a sail on the Q E 2 !!  Cost is R20.00 for us Pensioners (special price arranged by Bill Heeps).  We meet at 10.00 a m in the Parking Area for Intaka Island (see attached map and directions).  There is a Tearoom beside the Parking Area and we can have tea, scones etc to our own account.  Up to 60 people can be taken on different boat trips (each boat seats 16).  The ½ hour trip goes round the Island and down the Grand Canal behind Canal Walk Shopping Centre.  This morning outing will finish before lunchtime.  You can stay on to do the walk on Intaka Island if you wish (very interesting) – R4.00 for Pensioners.

   Dress casual (no kilts) – bring a friend or two.

NEWS OF MEMBERS:

Sad to report that June and Bill Campbell were attacked by two burglars in their cottage at Thornton Place (a security complex) on Tuesday night 1^st March.  Fortunately little was taken and injuries were minor, but both of them were traumatized quite a bit.  As at 8^th March, they are recovering well. Please keep our ailing members in your thoughts and prayers – Randy Ferguson, Bill Girvan, Tommy Cruikshanks, Piper Melvyn Deacon, Fred McQuarrie, Doug Lockett, and NORMA HARRIS who has just been admitted to Claremont Hospital.   You can always give them a phone call – see February Newsletter for phone numbers.  Little Chloe in Australia is still on medical treatment.  Janie Brown in Scotland is NOT getting a knee replacement at present – the National Health Service sent her the wrong letter by mistake !!

 Is it just me, or do we all find that time seems to fly past these days? – already 40 days of 2011 have gone!!  The important thing is I hope you all enjoy each day as it passes.

Our function this month is rather special – not only is it the official visit of our Federation Chief Frances Dickson and her husband Ivan, but it is a Combined Evening with Cape Town Callies to see the 2010 Edinburgh Military Tattoo.  We hope to see a good turnout so book NOW with Anne Stevenson

Burns Supper – Saturday 29^th January

A good turnout of 73 and we all enjoyed an excellent meal provided by our Caterer, Jeanette van der Merwe.  Lovely haggis was again prepared by Jean Girvan.  Our speakers did very well (Craig Dobson, Aileen de Groot, Stuart and Jacinta Munro).  We heard beautiful singing of Burns songs by Antoinette Blyth, accompanied by Victor Tichart (both of whom lead the Cape Town Philharmonia Choir)

 NEWS OF MEMBERS:

Let’s start on a cheery note!  We all know Taryn who is the leader of the Alexander School of Dancing (now called Celtic Dance Tapestry) – she brought her girls to dance often for us (Highland and Irish).  She is married to a Scot (David Harkness) and they had a baby boy (Connor) on 3^rd February.  Mother and son are doing well.  Congrats to grandparents Jeanette and John Moulder, and to great-granny Brenda Brebner.  Brenda will have to wait until May to see her new great-grandchild as she is in New Zealand for 3 months visiting her other daughter, Margaret and family.

Congrats also to Aileen and Herman de Groot on the wedding of their son, John, early in March. 

Health of our Members seems generally to be OK, but let’s all keep in our prayers Randy Ferguson, Bill Girvan, Tommy Cruikshanks and also our Piper Melvyn Deacon and Fred McQuarrie who are not keeping well these days.  Jill Mitchell says that her 6 year old granddaughter in Australia, Chloe, is having to get further medical treatment.  A suggestion to you all – how about some of you making a phone call or two to them to say we are thinking of them – Randy & Norma (021.913.4833); Bill & Jean (021.557.4474) Tommy & Morag in Knysna (044.384.1699) Melvyn & Joan (021.558.7280) Fred & Maureen (021.553.3691)  Janie Brown in Scotland is getting a knee replacement (her second) shortly.  Best wishes, Janie!
