Newsletter July 2011

Dear Members

It is my pleasure to report on the outcome of the recent Annual General Meeting held on Sunday, 10 July at the Victoria Park Bowling Club.

The following people were elected:

Chief: Sandra Strang 041 373 6311

Chieftain Bruce Strang 041 373 6311

Hon Secretary/Treasurer: Frances Dickson 041 360 8263

Senior Chieftain: Ivan Dickson 041 360 8263

Chieftain: Agnes Bean 041 581 3792

Scribe: Jill Mackenzie 041 368 5239

Committee: Llewellyn Faifer 041 373 5020

Andrew Sked 041 583 3043

Dawn Sked 041 583 3043

Cathy Stewart 041 582 4410

Ken Bean 041 581 3792

I would like to express the gratitude of the Society to the following people for their hard work and support over the past year, Past Chief Llewellyn Faifer, Past Lady President Jeanette Lloyd, Treasurer Des Sewel, Past Snr Chieftain Alistair & Claire Wilson.

Also a big thank you to all those members who attended the Annual General Meeting and to Past Chief Rob Campbell for taking the Chair during the elections.

Bruce and I are going on a nice long holiday and will be away for 9 weeks, so I will leave you in the very capable hands of Snr Chieftain, Past Chief Ivan Dickson (contact number above). It would be dishonest of me if I were to say I was sorry to be leaving when I had just been elected as Chief, but this appointment was unexpected and my holiday in the UK and Canada has been planned for a few months and the weeks have been counted off in anticipation! On my return, I will do my best, with the help of the committee, to ensure that you, our members, have some very enjoyable functions to attend.

Federation Chief Frances Dickson, Jean Faifer (Llewellyn’s Mom), Des Sewel, Sandra Strang,

Cathy Stewart, Jill Mackenzie & Llewellyn Faifer

On Saturday, 2nd July members of the Society met at 6th Avenue Shopping Centre to recognise World Tartan Day (which was officially celebrated on 1st July). Young members of the ‘Bells “Extra Special” Caledonian Pipe Band also took part and marched through the shopping mall. It is always nice to see the young ones taking part.

Dear Members

Things have been a bit slow in the association lately; this has been due to the fact that I had to go to hospital for an operation and am now recovering at home. I am unfortunately very limited in my mobility as I can’t drive and I am on crutches. Unfortunately I am going to be immobile probably until the end of June.

Please remember to book for the Tattoo evening as we need to know numbers for catering purposes.

The P.E. Scottish will be hosting the annual Communities Day at the VPBC on the 25th September 2011. This is an annual event where the different communities promote their food, music and culture. There will also be a 5 a side mini soccer tournament, a bowls tournament, highland games and hopefully a family walk. Please make a note of the date now.

Please see attached poster for the show Kilts, Celts and Welsh Rarebit.

Members please note: According to the Constitution and Rules of the Society section 9: Any member who has failed to pay his current annual membership to the Association within a period of 6 months from the commencement of the Association’s financial year, shall be deemed to be a member who is nor in good standing, and the Committee may, by a resolution only recorded in the Minute Book, resolve:-

(a) To remove the defaulting member from the membership roll, in which case a letter shall be sent to the last known address, advising the defaulter that unless payment is forthwith made of all arrears due to the Association, he shall forfeit all benefits of membership:

(b) To allow the matter to remain in abeyance: or

(c) To waive the payment of subscription, in total or in part, in cases where the member through misfortune or ill health has been unable to pay his subscription.

If any member is in doubt as to whether they are up to date or not, please contact our treasurer, Des Sewel on 041 – 5817733.

Bessie Petzer wishes to thank all members who prayed and thought of her during her illness.

Please remember to visit the Federations website: scotlandsa.co.za

The Ceilidh Dancers have changed their days of dancing from a Monday evening to a Tuesday afternoon. For more info please contact Jill McKenzie.

Remember that congress is in Welkom in October and a booking form is attached if you are interested in attending. Any member of the association can go if they want.

How to Look Your Best in Highland Dress

Do you know the proper way to wear each piece of Highland Dress?

Kilt Hose (socks) should be 2-3 fingers below the knee cap. There should be consistent length on the individual’s sock turnover, which should be about 3-4 finger widths. The outside pattern of the sock should be shown on the turnover.

The Sgian Dhus, or black knife, is normally worn down the right sock. A left handed person may wear it on the left leg. Only the top inch of the sgian dhus should show above the sock.

Sporrans should be kept clean and polished. It should be cantered to the front of the kilt, 3 fingers below the waist belt buckle. The strap goes through the loops on the back of the kilt. Drummers will need to wear sporrans to the side while playing, but should move it back to the front of the kilt when not performing.

The shirt should be clean with no wrinkles. Military pins should be worn on the left pocket overlap on the right personal side. On Remembrance Day, poppies are to be worn on the personal left side pocket over the heart.

The tie should be clean and the bottom point should at least touch the top of the kilt or be worn inside the top of the kilt. The top of the pin on the tie-tack should be aligned with the bottom edge of the pocket flap.

The belt buckle should be cantered at the front of the body. The belt is worn firm to the body over the sporran strap, but not through the kilt loops. It should be level from front to back either at the top of the kilt or one finger down from the top edge of the kilt.

To tie brogue laces, cross the laces, pull them tight with a simple knot. Twist three times and pull tight again to create a vertical thong. Pass the laces around the back of the ankle and bring them to the front. Tie a normal bow. The remaining lace and toggles should hang to the front. Make sure your brogues are clean and polished.

Flashes should be worn on the outside of the leg, bringing the sock turnover down to cover half of the double loop of the flash. They should be ironed flat so that they lie flat on the side of the leg.

Kilt pins should be worn approximately 4″ up and 3″ in from the right hand side of the kilt front apron.

A kilt closes right apron to left buckle through the hole and fastened to the left buckle. The left apron to the right fastened the waist and hip buckles, fringed edge and kilt pin to the right. The kilt should come to the centre of your knees and sit well up on your natural waist. When fastening the waist, if the tartan lines pulls, you have it too tight. Let it rest on your hips. The pleats should be at the back of the kilt. The hem of the kilt should just touch the floor when kneeling.

The Glengarry ribbons should be wrinkle free and lie flat. The glen is worn with the point in line with the nose, cocked to the right, 1″ above the left eyebrow and ½” above the right eyebrow.

Dear Members

Jeannette and I hope you all had a peaceful and relaxing festive season, and that the New Year finds you all in good health. The New Year is going to be busy with our Burns Supper and the Gathering in March.

Please note that the P.E. Scottish Association’s new postal address is: P.O. Box 5909, Walmer, 6065. The committee took the decision to move the post box due to parking problems and the safety issues of having to walk a fare distance along Govan Mbeki to the post box.

Please remember to visit the Federations website: scotlandsa.co.za

The gathering committee is looking for volunteers to help at the Gathering. Please contact me if you are able to help, even if it is for a short time.

A little information from Eileen Boggess for anyone thinking of holidaying in Scotland:

We would appreciate it if you would be kind enough to make your Caledonian Society members aware of a new self-catering holiday cottage on the Isle of Skye. With beautiful loch views, Keeper’s Cottage is located in the charming village of Skeabost Bridge, only six miles from Portree. Skeabost Bridge has a country house hotel, a golf course and the best salmon river on Skye. We would be delighted to accommodate your members at our cottage and would like to draw their attention to our website www.keeperscottage-skye.co.uk

Kind regards, John and Wendy Cowpe.

ILL MEMBERS

Please remember Willie Mew, who is recovering from surgery, Bessie Petzer, Charles Parmenter and Catherine Reilly and keep them in your thoughts and prayers and we hope they make a speedy recovery.

Please see the attached flyer.

WHAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT GLASGOW

Taken from the Bell’s Extra Special Times Edition 32

John Logie Baird, the inventor of the television, transmitted the first long distance TV pictures from a room in the Central Hotel, Glasgow.

The Glasgow underground or “tube” is known as the “Clockwork Orange” because of the colour of its carriages. Glasgow is the only city in Scotland, which has an underground train service.

Classical concerts are regularly held in the pool of Glasgow’s Western Baths Club, when it has been emptied of water of course.

Robert Carlyle was originally a Glasgow house painter prior to becoming a major television and cinema actor.

Charles Macintosh, inventor of the waterproof coat, lived and worked in Glasgow where, in 1824, he was responsible for the first commercial manufacture of the waterproof material.
